Noise in Your Workplace?

It’s now important to make sure regular audiometric testing is part of your WHS plan. The SafeWork NSW exemption for the audiometric testing requirements of clause 58(2) of the WHS Regulation 2011 – was granted until 31 December 2020. Altius Group WHS Specialist, Matthew Counsel, explains why now is the time to check your compliance with these changes.

Altius Group audiometric testing is carried out by specialists with training in this area, in line with Australian/New Zealand Standards. Audiometric testing should be made available to all persons likely to be exposed to workplace noise above exposure criteria in line with state-specific WHS guidelines.

It is generally advised audiometric testing be carried out within three months of commencing work. It is also important to check your state’s guidelines on the frequency of audiometric testing required for your workplace.

SafeWork NSW states that “from December 31, persons conducting a business or undertaking in NSW are provided with an appropriate time frame to prepare for the implementation of audiometric testing of workers who are frequently required to use personal protective equipment (PPE) in workplaces with noise levels that exceed the 'exposure standard for noise'. The exemption was first published on 9 December 2016 in the NSW Government Gazette number 111, page 3528.

Altius Group WHS Specialists conduct baseline audiometric testing and regular audiometric checks – we can also help you check for any gaps in your compliance relating to the Dec 31 change to audiometric testing requirements.
